Conclusion and Predictions As these themes develop I think Omega will likely become the dominant player in Drupal 7 HTML5 base themes. It is in active development and has its own microsite with detailed documentation. The unique features that really set it apart are the Context integration, Responsive layout (can adapt to different size displays), and Drush support. On top of that there is a UI sub-module in development that will allow drag & drop configuration of Omega layouts. There will likely be a second theme that is minimal in it's approach that will be competitive with Omega in reported installs, but it isn't clear which theme that will end up being; Sky or an HTML5 port of Zen are likely candidates. I hope this analysis is helpful in weighing your options for a starter theme. Researching & writing this article has definitely helped me understand the climate better. It can be used as a troubleshooting tool to determine whether module-related CSS and JavaScript are interfering with a more complex theme, and can be used by designers interested in studying Drupal's default markup without the interference of changes commonly made by more complex themes. Mothership The mothership theme is the über "clean up this html that drupal provides" theme - so if you wanna make any sense of this them use it as a parent theme! The basic idea is to use this theme before other "theme systemes" (zen, basic, studio, 960). The only thing this theme does is to clean up and remove html & classes that I dont think is necessary, and by that creating a cleaner html code. It is very flexible, has many features and boasts to be the "most advanced responsive front-end framework in the world". The integration with Drupal is mainly for Drupal 7 but work is already underway for Drupal 8 (there is already a dev version available for that). Boilerplate The Boilerplate Drupal base theme is based on the well known HTML5 Boilerplate frontend template. It is a popular framework used by many websites - such as Google, Microsoft or NASA. The Drupal theme that uses it is sponsored by Metal Toad and offers many of its powerful features to be used for your own custom theme. Responsive Skeleton The Responsive Skeleton base theme is built around the Skeleton boilerplate. The latter is a lean collection of css rules that aims to provide a powerful responsive grid with only a basic UI but that is able to adapt to your design whatever that might be.
Both of these are from TopNotchThemes, which sells various custom themes for around $300 apiece for a single-site license. (You can "buy out" a theme for around $3 grand, which both allows you to use it as much as you want, and takes the theme off the market. ) Other themes to consider I looked for themes that are actively developed, use CSS, are fairly minimalist, and are designed to be customized. Note: Zen and Simply Modern require the ThemeSettings API Module to be installed. Zen: This seems to be the new preferred minimalist starter theme. Simpla: Based on (and requires) Zen Austin: Another Zen subtheme, created as part of a " CMS Showdown " associated with SXSW 2009. Blueprint: Based on the the Blueprint CSS framework Layout Studio: A base starter theme that tries to improve on Zen, from (a design firm from British Columbia). Simply Modern: "[A] table-less, CSS driven design sporting an advanced feature set. " Basic: A stripped-down version of Zen, from Raincity Studios. Clean: Another simple starter theme.
